Museum Blambangan

An ancient history museum in Banyuwangi Regency.

History of the Blambangan Museum

The Blambangan Museum is a public museum which was founded on December 25 1977 and was inaugurated by the First Level Governor of East Java, namely Soenandar Priyoseodarmo. The aim of developing this museum is to preserve the nation`s cultural heritage, especially the types of historical heritage that belong to the people of Banyuwangi Regency. This museum was given the name Blambangan because it is said that this area used to be the territory of the former Blambangan Kingdom which was quite well known, during the heyday of the Majapahit Kingdom. Initially the Blambangan Museum occupied a Dutch heritage building which once functioned as the Regent`s Assistant Office or Kawedanan. This ancient building began to function as a museum since 2003. After regional autonomy, management of the museum was transferred to the Banyuwangi Regency Culture and Tourism Office and on January 2 2004, the museum location was moved to the Banyuwangi Regency Culture and Tourism Office. Currently the museum is managed by the Blambangan Museum Technical Implementation Unit (UPT). The types of collections in this museum consist of ethnography, archaeology, histotrics, numistics, physiology, ceramics and fine arts.
